Why Your Limestone Isn’t Working (And What to Do About It)

Correcting soil acidity is one of the most important steps in establishing productive food plots. Limestone is the go-to material for neutralizing acidic soils, but sometimes, even after applying it, the soil pH barely moves. When that happens, it’s natural to wonder: Why didn’t the limestone work?
The answer often comes down to how the limestone was applied.
Limestone Only Works Where It Touches Soil
Limestone is made of carbonate, either calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate. It’s the carbonate, not the calcium or magnesium, that neutralizes acidity. But carbonate has two important limitations:
- It’s poorly soluble in water
- It’s not very mobile in soil
In simple terms, limestone stays exactly where you put it.
That means if you spread limestone on the surface without tilling, all those particles remain concentrated at the top layer. The root zone below, where acidity actually affects plant growth, never receives the material it needs. Without physical mixing, the limestone can’t make intimate contact with soil particles, and the pH won’t rise.
Why Tillage Matters
To get the full benefit of limestone, it must be incorporated into the soil. Tillage distributes the particles throughout the root zone, ensuring they touch enough soil to neutralize acidity effectively.
Surface-applied limestone alone cannot correct severely acidic soils. It simply doesn’t move downward fast enough to make a meaningful change.
But What About Established Clover Plots?
This is where strategy matters.
Once clover is established, you obviously can’t till without damaging the stand. So how do you manage soil acidity in perennial clover?
The key is to fix major acidity problems before planting. Use tillage to incorporate corrective amounts of limestone into the soil profile before seeding clover.
After establishment, you can maintain ideal pH with:
- Frequent, low-rate surface applications
- Regular soil testing to monitor changes
These small, repeated applications help maintain pH, but they cannot correct a severely acidic soil that wasn’t addressed beforehand.
Corrective vs. Maintenance Lime: Know the Difference
This distinction is critical:
- Corrective limestone
- Applied when soil is severely acidic
- Must be tilled in
- Raises pH throughout the root zone
- Maintenance limestone
- Applied to already corrected soils
- Can be surface-applied
- Helps maintain ideal pH in established clover
Surface-applied limestone is effective for maintenance, but not for correcting major acidity problems.
The Pelleted Lime Myth
Many folks assume pelleted lime works faster than aglime. In reality, the difference is minimal. Both materials rely on their smallest particles to raise pH quickly, and aglime contains plenty of fine particles.
For the fastest possible pH rise:
- Work aglime into the soil
- Drag a layer of pelleted lime across the surface

This combination maximizes both immediate and long-term pH improvement.
Bottom Line
If your limestone “isn’t working,” the most likely reason is simple: it wasn’t mixed into the soil. Limestone must contact soil particles to neutralize acidity, and without tillage, it can’t reach the root zone where it’s needed.
Correct severe acidity before planting. Maintain pH after planting. And always rely on regular soil testing to guide your decisions.
