Whitetail Forage Oats Plus consists primarily of the Whitetail Institute’s winter hardy and high sugar forage oats, plus small amounts of specially selected triticale and wheat for even more winter hardiness. In university testing of various oat varieties, the grazing pressure by deer on one specific variety of oats was so heavy the university researchers eliminated that variety from consideration due to the reduction in grain production. The university put it on the proverbial "shelf". The Whitetail Institute found out about this oat through one of its many worldwide contacts in agriculture and wanted to test it for obvious reasons. Those tests proved not only that the oat was highly preferred because of its high sugar content but it was also very winter-hardy. The Whitetail Institute appropriately named the new variety "Whitetail Oats". Like many Whitetail Institute seeds, it might not be ideal for agricultural purposes (growing hay, feeding cows or producing grain) but it proved perfect for deer hunters because the deer love it. Whitetail Oats can only be found in Whitetail Institute products. Whitetail Forage Oats Plus is designed to be planted in late summer or fall.
